I was upset after reading it and knowing that it wasn't real. I didn't get to see the "fight" and didn't know about it until after it was removed, though knew of it because of the mention on the main page. I certainly hope nothing like that ever happens.

Be reassured--it won't. It lies outside the realm of possibility. For one, I'm not capable of actually having a conversation that mean-spirited without melting into a little fetal ball of tears in the corner. For two...it just won't. Heh.

whoa

well i saw the other artist coming up with the comics, and saw the little mention of a spat on the comic page, and all i thought was "?, um"
(it was pitiful, but you "really wanted to know")

Yes, yes we DID really want to know. And very much appreciate feedback. *nod* Also? QC is hawt!

*raises hand*

^^;; I was one of the masses huddling in the corner hoping to weather out the 'fight'

Though I saw the original post I never noticed that the comment box had erupted into a 'fight.' I'm part of a LJ RPG so my pages fill up fast.

Then I heard about it being a fight on the front page and got concerned. I've been a watch on two other comics that died because the artist and writer decided they HAD to go their separate ways or kill each other. One of them was so horrible that it totally polarized all watchers onto fronts that started a flaming war on a shout box.

I was concern you had another artist 'filling-in' but hopeful at the same time that there was a 'break' where you two could 'work things out'.

I'm highly relieved that it was all staged; though it stings a little in some ways because of past experiences about comics I've really cared about.

Re: *raises hand*

*chagrined smile* The good news is that I can all but guarantee you that this will never actually happen between the great Betsy-sama and myself. (I say "all but" because 1-it's silly to make promises that aren't completely within the scope of human control and 2-doing so is the best way to jynx it in every book I've ever read). But truly, we're both a little too compulsive about communication (not to mention guilt... good grief, if we ever had a fight serious enough to get in the way of UC we'd probably both need therapy).

*hugz in a reassuring manner* And hey, if we ever did find we couldn't work together any longer (see above paragraph on unlikelihood of that possibility) it would be as quiet and peacable a transition as it could possibly be. But, that's an "if" that will remain forever irrelevant. Go team UC!

Oh well played. I missed the original "fight" in LJ, but saw Betsy's blurb explaining the situation, and while I was surprised; I admit I bought it, and am relieved to find it was a prank. Kudos.

Well, I for one.

When I saw the front page a while back and started seeing the guest artist I more or less just accepted it as true and thought, "Well that sucks."

Now that I see that I've been tricked I find myself wishing that you'd left that original LJ post up longer. Made it more exciting. Maybe spilled a little blood. You know, that kind of thing. *chuckles*

Re: Well, I for one.

But blood is so hard to clean out of livejournal-linoleum... *grin* We thought about leaving the fight up longer, I confess. We certainly had ridiculous amounts of fun "having" it in the first place (sitting in the same room so we could make sure not to inadvertently step on each others' ACTUAL toes...).

Um....I was remotely troubled and disturbed...but I kinda forsaw something like this. TRICKSTERS! Yey. So I kinda didn't read the comic for a week...BAD ME.

September 11 2006, 18:23:30 UTC 5 years ago

aww, you suspected? We are not as sneaky as we thought! (that's good, actually... we rather hoped someone would see through our ploy, tried to take it enough over the top that it would be some semblance of possible--pretty sure we didn't completely succeed at that attempt, though)

September 11 2006, 16:46:14 UTC 5 years ago

So what was the point of the experiment? Yes, I noticed (after the original removal, so didn't see the beginning) and was bothered by it. It's pretty much a given that any webcomic written by two people is pretty much doomed. I don't usually read them for that reason. Sometimes something will catch my interest enough that I'll try, and invariably they fight/move/divorce and it ends. So I pretty much gave up on the comic when nothing else was said and the guest art continued, and only checked back out of wishful thinking. You likely did lose readers who won't bother to check back. And you worried others. The ones who worried most would be the ones who liked you the most and who worried about you as people, not as a comic. Hopefully those who were actually friends were let in on the 'joke' earlier.

So why? I honestly don't see the humor. Maybe it's just not something I can get. You said you wanted to know, so I'm attempting to be blunt... it comes off sounding like an angsty teenager using melodrama to find out if anybody notices or cares when they threaten to run away or jump off a bridge. Pretending something bad happened in order to get people to say good things to/about them. Attention seeking behaviour like that is immature and annoying, not humorous or clever.

September 11 2006, 18:21:11 UTC 5 years ago

It honestly wasn't meant to be a hurtful endeavor. It wasn't even meant as an experiment really, and the wanting feedback stems more from the fact that it seemed as though nobody actually noticed the change. The idea occurred because, as avid readers of a great number of webcomics ourselves, we had been tricked by--terrified in response to--and ultimately amused with similar (though admittedly not identical) pranks pulled by other artists and creators of many of the webcomics we read.

Perhaps I'm too optimistic about the realm of team endeavors... they do end badly sometimes, but I've been disappointed by more single-person projects that ended for one reason or another than I have by defunct team projects. Worth pondering, I think.

(if we had really wanted to be cruel, we could easily have dragged the prank out much longer)

*wave*

I check UC regularly, but that day I got there after you'd deleted the LJ!Drama; but seeing your fine art show up at B-Movie Comic (another regular read of mine) and Roman's art show up on your page, I sorta figured there was some tomfoolery going on. The fact that you later swapped Roman's art for yours pretty much confirmed that conspiracy theory. Nice to see I wasn't going nuts :-)

You know, I always read your LJ username as "Little Styo". I think you need to draw us a picture of a styo. ;-)

Re: *wave*

Congratulations, you're the first person we've heard from that follows both comics and saw the drama unfold from both perspectives! I sorta stalked the BMC forums to sew the seeds of "what the hell is going on?" when people commented there.

Little Styo, huh? I kinda like it. Hmmmm...

I didn't catch the actual fight, and actually the way the announcement about it was worded it hardly registered a blip on my radar-I figured it would blow over pretty fast. You guys could've done a little more on the drama side ;) and maybe instead of deleting it all, just deleted one side of the arguement. As it was, it was a little anticlimactic. Nice idea, though =D I'd suggest you try again in a year or so, but I think everybody would be on to you, no matter how long you waited. Ah well. I'm sure you could come up with something else if you ever feel like pranking us again (Please? If you do it often enough maybe there'll be one or two where I don't miss all the action! xD).

[info]littlestyo

September 12 2006, 00:42:56 UTC 5 years ago

Heh, nothing (except maybe excessive lack of updates) frustrates me more than when I miss the actual prank drama for a webcomic I read. So I understand. And yeah, I have a feeling we've used up our prank potential for the time being. In fact, now Betsy-sama and I REALLY aren't ever allowed to split--'cuz no one would actually believe it was happening.

noooo, not the rainbows! Anything but the rainbows! Or um... well, we don't have the space to host that many big animated GIFs ANYway, so I guess it's moot. Hmm....

Hum, honestly? I missed the first post, and was sort of annoyed by it being deleted. I've fallen under Eric Burns' spell I suppose. I agree with him that you ought to own your words. Leave them in place. If you decide later you were wrong, you say so, in a seperate post. If you need to correct something, mark through the old version and add the correction afterwards. It seems more honest. Of course this was just a joke, but from the outside it didn't really look like one. I mostly figured it was internet drama and it would get resolved or not and I wouldn't worry about it until it did.

[info]avatarofchaos

September 14 2006, 02:38:45 UTC 5 years ago

i very much agree with you. you will notice that if you looks back in the rants, they are all saved as they were written, no editing, so taking things back. i very much believe that you whould stand by what you say, and if you didn't want to say it out in the open in the first place, you shouldn't have.

but? the deleting was part of the whole "internet drama" mask. which is why it's all saved so people can read what they "missed".

I totally knew

At first I was definitely huddled in a corner girl, but as I read through it, I kinda wondered if it was for real. I know everyone's going "She is totally making that up to make herself seem cooler", but I swear I'm not. My best friend and I do crap like that all the time. It's usually in IM form, but we have been know to take it to MySpace every once in a while.

As for the art...I was totally confused, but sad when the new art went away. I figured if the fight HAD been real, then maybe you had asked a friend to take over while you sorted yourselves out.

I think the whole thing is completely hilarious and I wouldn't be too upset if you did something like this again. Just know you have at lest one fan that gets your twisted, twisted scene of humor. ;P

[info]littlestyo

September 14 2006, 03:48:31 UTC 5 years ago

Re: I totally knew

Weeeh, twisty! In retrospect we're hearing/finding/thinking we ought to have played up the drama far more than we did in order to have the joke be more successful... I also think the unamused contingent would probably have been even less so if we had, however, so perhaps that balance wasn't the worst way to go with it...?

The plan is to leave the alternate art, and the "fight", and the whole description up in the archives as-is, with the linking from the cropped image on the archived page. *nod* So two arts for the price of one! Now and forever, amen. Ummmm, or something. *grin*

i thought it was funny. i liked it. i know it sounds really carzy that i thought it was . tho it kinda worried me lil bit b/c i do actually follow the comic so i was wondering if you are going to get bac to the story line?

[info]littlestyo

Fear not, story-line is once again go! In fact, I just finished three more pages (of the drawing and inking stage) for the chapter! *nod*

[info]catc10

September 16 2006, 03:35:31 UTC 5 years ago

So, I didn't see the fight, I was confused over the whole thing. I *did* notice that you'd switched artists, but didn't make too much a deal over it. For some reason it felt like b-movie comic hadn't updated in FOREVER. Like, stopped right when Biff was made to have red-paint blow up in his face. So, when I saw they were making the comics for UC I checked B-movie Comic and it had scores of pages I hadn't seen as was far more occupied with that.
I figured that you were cooling off. Guess not.
If you'd kept the fight up longer than half an hour so that more people saw it, it might have made a bigger impact.

September 16 2006, 16:19:13 UTC 5 years ago

Heh, I can see how big chunks of unread comic archives could distract from a rather confusing running gag. The consensus (and we agree here) does seem to be that leaving the fight up longer would have helped with a lot more people 'getting' the joke... though in our defense, we did leave it up for twelve hours (slightly longer than half an hour *lopsided grin*). We've just come to the conclusion that 36 would've been more successful.

Wow. That was pretty scary to read (I didn't notice it at first of course, just read it now) I HATE getting into fights like that... I got in a few on AAX actually. It seriously hurts me when I get in a war like that only. Online communication seems to make fighting so much easier. I always get in pointless fights through misunderstandings... and both people get hurt by it. I'm glad it was only a joke.

I can tell that you both had fun doing it. (I know I would if I had some sort of power... XD)

[info]littlestyo

September 19 2006, 15:03:47 UTC 5 years ago

There were a couple times on AAX ('cuz yes, I stalked the community compulsively, and have still not un-joined 'cuz 1-would like to have time for it again someday and 2-still want to follow) where I really REALLY wanted to verbally slap someone on your behalf... but more people getting involved never actually helps, and people sometimes take the fact that communication is online to mean it's not real and thus not follow the rules of civility...

I try desperately to overcompensate when I'm upset with someone on-line, actually, 'cuz it's so damn hard to convey nuances of any kind. The ridiculous amounts of care with phrasing, and often just walking away 'cuz there's no way to keep it from escalating... it gets a little frustrating sometimes, no?
